Tacia’s Baby Quilt

There’s some very exciting news happening at Brooklyn Quilting Co.  One of my oldest and dearest friends, Tacia, is having a baby!  Tacia and I have been friends since we were around 13-years-old and this is the first baby for her and her husband.  Needless to say, we are all very excited.

They have decided to keep the baby’s gender a secret and the only direction I got for nursery colors are gray, white—very neutral colors.  I reallllly want to know what she’s having and I tried everything to get it out of her, but no dice!  So, I made a neutral quilt.

A lot of times for baby quilts I like to do a simple half square triangle quilt.  They’re classic, easy and always look great.

And for the back of the quilt I often like to choose a patterned fabric to go with the simple solid half square triangle front.  I had this great piece of Japanese fabric from Kokka called Cosmic Zoo and it is the perfect neutral quilt back.

I don’t think the pictures do it justice, but the Kokka fabric is really special and ties the whole thing together.

Congrats, Tacia!  I can’t wait to meet Baby B!

Map of the World Baby Quilt

Today I get to share a very cool baby quilt with you.  This one was made with lots of input from the mom, and I have to say she nailed it!

My fellow Brooklynite, Stefanie from the home design blog Brooklyn Limestone, was designing the nursery for her second baby, this one a boy.  And in my book, every nursery needs a baby quilt.  Am I right or am I right?  So I chatted with Stefanie and learned she was planning a modern safari “hello world” themed nursery and really liked the idea of using a map printed fabric for the baby quilt.

Being a home design blogger with impeccable taste, Stefanie wanted a map print that didn’t have a lot going on and she really liked the vintage map look.

After some searching, I found this one from the Etsy store Mapology.  It is one panel and the size works perfectly for the back of a baby quilt.

The colors and the vintage look make for a very cool nursery.

For the front of the quilt, Stefanie wanted something geometric looking and chose a herringbone pattern.  I used Kona Cotton Cadet for the herringbone.  It pulls out one of the blue colors from the map fabric and also coordinates with the blue and white colors she’s using for the nursery.

I’m calling this baby quilt a success.  Stefanie just had her baby over the weekend and I can’t wait to see the finished nursery.  I’ll be sure to post a link to Stefanie’s blog post once it’s up.

Note: If you would like to order your own Map of the World baby quilt you can do so in my Etsy shop.  I am able to customize the color(s) of the herringbone pattern.  You can find the custom order request here.

Update: Stefanie at Brooklyn Limestone has posted the nursery and it is gorgeous!  You can check it out here.

Signature Series – Blue and Gray

Today I’m sharing the latest colorway of my Signature Series baby quilts with this blue and gray version. I love this pattern and have had a lot of fun experimenting with different color combinations when using it. The pattern is so versatile for mixing colors and makes a great modern statement in a baby’s nursery.

When I was putting this together, I moved the different colors around to see what I liked best and finally landed on this.

For the back of the quilt, I used a gray polka dot fabric.  The gray in the polka dots matches the gray fabric on the front of the quilt.

I had a little bit of navy fabric in my stash with tiny white stars on it that works perfectly for the binding.

This quilt is now available for purchase in my Etsy Shop.

Signature Series – Atlanta Baby

It’s March, and what better way to begin March than with a new quilt?  Today I’m sharing a baby quilt that is a version of my Signature Series baby quilts I introduced last year.  I designed this pattern with the intent of making many versions of it because it is so versatile.  I love this one!

This baby quit is extra special because it wasn’t made for a client but for a friend of mine in Atlanta.  Before I moved to New York, I spent almost six years living in Atlanta.  I moved there for my job – not straight out of college but pretty close – and I did not know one single person.  As many of us do, I became great friends with one of my co-workers.  We were both just beginning our careers and ended up spending many hours, at work and outside of work, together.  Now, so many years later, we are still friends today.

My Atlanta friend Allison and her husband are expecting their second child and it’s a girl!  A few weeks ago she sent me her nursery colors with the direction of a peachy pink color, light aqua, super light gray, with accents of black and white.  I can work with that, so I used the Signature Series to incorporate all of those colors.

I think my favorite part of this quilt is the black and white polka dot binding.  It is the perfect finishing touch, and since I love polka dots, there’s that.

This baby quilt is now in its new home in Atlanta and we are all awaiting the arrival of its owner.

Signature Series

Here at Brooklyn Quilting Co. I get a number of requests for baby quilts, and for a while I’ve been thinking about a new design to switch things up a bit. I wanted something modern, bold and graphic looking, yet simple.  I also wanted something that really speaks to my design aesthetic.  This is what I came up with.

004

It’s inspired by my favorite quilt, Inman Park.  I had the idea a few months ago to take the design from Inman Park and blow it up to make it one baby-sized quilt.  From the start I thought it would look good with solids to keep that simple design that I was aiming for.

008

I also went with a solid colored back for this quilt. I did think about using a print for the back, and really considered a print for the binding, but in the end I stuck with my initial instinct and kept it simple.

006

I’m not, however, married to keeping the Signature Series solids only. It could work really well to use a print on the back and coordinating solids on the front.  Maybe eventually I will even try using different prints throughout the quilt, but for now I really love the modern look of the solids.

As I was finishing this quilt up, I realized it could also work well as a wall hanging. Now I’m not really one who goes for quilt wall hangings – it’s just not my thing – but this might be an exception.  It’s a perfect size and could be fun for a baby nursery.

What do you think of my new Signature Series baby quilt? I have a million color combinations that I am itching to add to the collection.  Time to get sewing!

Colorado Boy II

Happy Fall Sunday! It is a little chilly here in Brooklyn this morning, and I woke up to the familiar clanking of the radiator kicking in.  When you live in an old building in New York with radiator heat it’s either on at full force and feels like a sauna, or it’s off completely.  There’s no in-between, but I am enjoying the toasty feel of the heat this morning.  The joys of living in old buildings!

I’ve been a little busy the past couple of weeks doing non-quilting things – don’t you hate when that happens – but I have managed to finish the second Colorado Boy baby quilt.  I had enough fabric left from the first one to make a second quilt, so I did.

001

003

Of course it is slightly different, with the main difference being the back of the quilt. I didn’t take an image of the back, but the first one was blue and this one is gray.  After seeing both the blue and the gray, I like them both and don’t have a preference.

002

004

I’ll be putting this baby quilt up on my Etsy shop soon.  The goal is to get it listed today, but don’t hold me to it.  But I promise it will be there soon!

And finally in cuter news, I got my hands on a photo of the original Colorado Boy quilt in-use.  Meet Wyatt Mason chilling out on his quilt.

Hope you have a great Sunday!

Far Far Away – Finished

Happy Labor Day weekend!  Before the official end of summer, and the end of August, I’ve managed to finish one last quilt with the Far Far Away baby quilt.  It’s been a busy and productive quilt making month here in Brooklyn.  This one has now been moved to the finished pile and will soon be listed in the Etsy shop.

010

As I mentioned here  and here , I had a charm pack of the Heather Ross Far Far Away collection that was perfect for a baby quilt.

005 (2)

I wanted to do something a little softer looking and went with a gray background rather than something bright.  This quilt is definitely not as bold as some of my more recent projects, but I really like the mellower look.  I used the same gray (Kona Cotton Shadow) for the back and I used Kona Cotton Pansy for the purple binding.

009

The Far Far Away collection has so many beautiful colors which make for lots of options if you are pairing a solid with it.  Now that I’ve made this baby quilt, I’m itching to get my hands on more of the collection and make something a little larger in size.   Has anyone else made anything with Far Far Away yet?

Colorado Boy – Finished

Last month I had a special request to make a baby boy quilt for a family in Colorado.  The only two design requirements were to make it a strip quilt and to use gray.  Easy enough!  This is what I came up with:

025

Since it is for a baby boy, I decided I had to throw in some blue, but rather than use bright blues I chose blues that are mostly a little darker and have some gray in them.  I did throw in the one shade of bright blue to add a little pop.

026

I think the different shades of blues and grays make for a very modern looking baby quilt.

032

And surprise!  There are two.

038

I had just enough fabric left to make a second quilt so it is currently in-progress.  The second one will be listed in my Etsy shop when it’s done.

039

The two are (of course) not exactly alike in the front or the back.  The baby quilt that is on its way to Colorado has a dark blue backing while the one for the Etsy shop will have a pale gray back.  I’ll let you know when the second one is finished!

Purple + Teal

My purple and teal color experiment turned out way better than I thought it would.  Now that this quilt top is complete, I really like the look of it – more than I thought I would.  And the best news is that the color combination is not as much of an early 90s throwback as I thought it would be.

013

This is another baby quilt because I only had enough fabric for that size.  Now the only thing left is to decide what to do for the back.  Because there’s so much going on in the front, I might go with a solid for the back, but that is still TBD.  I do think I’m going to keep it in the purple color family.

014

One of the solids used in the quilt is Kona Cotton in plum, and I usually like to coordinate a fabric from the front for the backs of my quilts so plum could be what I go with.  Or maybe I’ll mix it up this time and try something different.  I might have to think on this one for a bit.

P.S. I don’t have a name for this one yet so for now it’s being referred to as Purple + Teal. If you have any name suggestions, feel free to share!

Boxed In Baby

Remember last year when I made this quilt I called Boxed In?  I had some blocks leftover and always planned to use them to make a baby quilt, and it has finally happened.

006

I still love this fabric.  Most of it is Dear Stella’s Piper collection and I think the prints are so fun and the colors are so great.

008

For the back, I had a large piece of the Piper floral print that I broke up by adding a solid purple strip through it.  I also needed just a bit more length so adding the purple strip was my solution.

010

Now that this baby quilt is done, it will be added to my Etsy shop just as soon as I get to it!
