Wyoming Wild West Vacation

If you follow me on Instagram, you would have noticed that I spent last week on vacation out West.  I have family in Wyoming’s Star Valley and a lot of us come together over the Fourth of July for a little family get together.  This is the second time we’ve done this and our annual Fourth of July vacation in Wyoming is becoming one of my favorites.  The weather is perfect and the scenery is stunning.  Of all the places I’ve ever been, I think Wyoming might be the most beautiful.

This year, I took the opportunity to visit Yellowstone, which I had never been to before, and it is an experience like no other.  If you’ve never visited, I highly recommend adding it to your life’s to-do list.  Mother Nature is quite impressive.

I couldn’t go on vacation without visiting some of the local quilt shops in the area.  My fellow quilters out there will know what I’m talking about.  You never know what you might find.

My first stop was in Cody, Wyoming at Friends & Co. Quilt Shop.  I saw an advertisement for the quilt shop in a local travel guide where they said they had 8,000 bolts of fabric.  Whoa!  I couldn’t pass up that opportunity.

I left Friends & Co. with four new pieces of fabric, including a couple of Anna Maria Horner pieces.

My next visit was to Stitch n Time in Jackson, Wyoming.

I did a little damage here, and by a little I mean a lot.  I left with some Riley Blake designs, Amy Butler, and lots more.

My last stop was at the True Value hardware store in Thayne, Wyoming.  Yes, you read that correctly; a hardware store.  My cousin told me to be sure to check it out.  I thought it would probably be a waste of time but I was game to give it a look.

Hello!  The True Value has got it going on.  They have a pretty decent fabric selection for a hardware store and even carry quite a bit of Amy Butler fabric.  I ended up buying more fabric from a hardware store than I ever thought possible.  Actually, I never really thought it was possible to get fabric at a hardware store.

And this is why you should visit the local quilt shops when you are on vacation.  So that’s my vacation fabric haul.  Not bad, huh?  Now I need to go on a fabric hiatus for a bit.

Spring Fling – Finished

It’s April, which means it can officially be declared springtime!  And just in time for spring is my finished Spring Fling quilt.

016

It’s still looking a little brown and dreary in my photos, but the weather in New York the past few days has certainly felt a lot more like spring than winter.  Yea!

018

I started this quilt back in January using Gina Martin’s Wrens & Friends collection by Moda that I got for Christmas.  The quilt came together pretty quickly but then it took a while for me to decide on the back.  I ended up using the Cream Star Bloom pattern from the collection and I am really happy with that choice.

024

I also added a line of scrap pieces I had leftover and I’m glad I did.  It makes the back just a little bit more interesting by doing that.

022

For the binding I debated what to do, but in the end decided the bright blue was the way to go.  I thought about going with one of the lighter patterns or solids, but I wanted one of the darker solids to really define the binding, so blue it was.

You can read more about how this quilt came together here.  Happy Spring, everyone!

New Fabric (with lots of !!!!!!!!!!)

What makes me happier than new fabric?  Not much.  And with all of the snow and dreary weather I needed something to put me in a good mood.  Fabric can do that for me.

I’ve managed to catch some good sales lately and had to add to my fabric collection.  I have no plans for any of these pieces yet, but now I’m starting to dream up some ways to use them.

First up is a little Amy Butler.  She is, and will always be, one of my favorites.  I love the bright colors in this fabric.

008

Next is some dreamy Anna Maria Horner.  I think the fabric on the far left is my favorite out of everything I got.

007

Of course some Denyse Schmidt had to happen.

014

And then I have a few random pieces that I really liked.  The one of the far left has a vintage feel to me, which I always love, and I haven’t bought much pink lately so I had to pick up a few pieces.  That fabric on the far right is part of the Dear Stella Piper collection.  You may remember that I did a quilt last year using Piper, but I did not use/have this design from the collection and I really like it.

019

By the way, I got the Cream Star Bloom fabric for the back of my Spring Fling quilt and I am working on that now.  I love seeing this quilt come together.

004

Have a great Sunday!

Spring Fling

Happy Super Bowl Sunday.  Are you planning to watch the game tonight?  I’m going to my friends’ apartment to eat Mexican food (hello guacamole) and watch the game with them.  But I think there will be more eating and laughing than game watching, and that is why I celebrate Super Bowl Sunday.

Now back to quilts!

024 (1)

My wonky blocks with Moda’s Wrens & Friends collection are done and I am so pleased with the quilt top.  I really love how it turned out, and love the happy Spring colors that make me forget it is February.  And cold.  And snowy.  And just kind of miserable outside.

As a reminder, here is the fabric (designed by Gina Martin) that I mixed in some solids with, most of which are Kona.

007

Each block is the same size but I tried to vary the cuts and shapes that make up the block.

022

This was made with fat quarters and it was just enough fabric for the quilt top.  I wanted to do one more column of blocks along the side but I didn’t have enough fabric left, so instead I added scraps of fabric between blocks to make the quilt a little wider.

This method actually ended up working pretty well and gives it an even more wonky look that I like.

026

Now I have to figure out the back.  It will probably be awhile before I get to it because I am completely out of the Wrens & Friends fabric and I want to use some of that for the back.  I am going to choose the fabric pattern that I like best from the collection and then get a big piece of that to use.  I think I’m leaning towards the pattern called Cream Star Blooms.  That’s the one on the top right in the fabric image early in the post.  Do you have a favorite?

Wrens & Friends

Happy Friday!  Who is ready for some weekend quilting?  I’ve got a couple of projects in the works that I plan on tackling.  My first one I wrote about Monday is almost done, and the second is currently in progress.

Remember Moda’s Wrens & Friends collection I got for Christmas?

Those fat quarter bundles are no more.  They are taking shape into some wonky blocks that I am really loving.  To complement Wrens & Friends I’ve added some bright, happy solids, and this quilt is looking a lot more like springtime than the dead of January that we are all dealing with.

What do you have planned for this weekend?  Have a great one!

Look What Santa Brought!

I think my family Santa knows me well.  Wrapped up under the tree were fat quarters of Moda’s Wrens & Friends collection.

Moda Wrens & Friends

I didn’t ask for any specific fabric but I think Santa did well choosing Wrens & Friends.  Isn’t it adorable?  I’m not sure how I’ll use this in a quilt yet, but I’ll have to come up with something good.

And because Santa was feeling especially generous, I received some new Denyse Schmidt fabric – always some of my favorite –and Patty Young and Cloud 9 fabric as well.

Also under the tree were some new handmade crocheted potholders and a dishcloth from my aunts.  I think the dishcloth is too pretty to use on dirty dishes so I’ll probably use it as a hot pad instead.  There’s nothing I like more than a handmade gift so I was pretty excited to get these.

I think I made out pretty well this year for gifts.  Anyone else find new fabric under the tree this year?  Or something else good?
