Wonderland – Finished

Doesn’t it feel good to finish a quilt you’ve had sitting around for a long time?  This Wonderland quilt, named for its Alice in Wonderland vibes, had been sitting in a pile of unfinished quilt tops for three years.  It wasn’t until the beginning of this year that I finally decided to tackle it.

My Wonderland quilt uses Denyse Schmidt New Bedford fabric surrounded by a black and white checkboard pattern, which is what reminds me so much of Alice in Wonderland.

I mentioned in an earlier blog postthat I started with the New Bedford fabric centerpieces and the quilt kept growing from there.  To get the New Bedford fabric and the checkerboard all looking centered and evenly distributed, the quilt kept getting bigger and bigger. It’s not the size I planned on but I’ll take it.  I rarely make quilts this big so I think it’s good to have some larger quilts in my collection.

The reason this quilt took so long to finish is because the large size made me take longer than normal to choose the right quilt back.

I had the main piece of fabric I wanted to use for the back – a large cut of Liberty of London pink floral – but I knew I needed something more.

After digging through my stash, I realized that Sleeping Porch fabric by Heather Ross would work well.

Now the back has a little corner of Sleeping Porch fabric that I quite like.

The binding on this quilt is also Denyse Schmidt and is from one of her old collections she did with Joann Fabric.

It feels pretty satisfying to have this quilt finally done.  And I like it so much I’m even using it on my own bed.

Now I’m just working on getting the right pink shams to make the bed complete.

Brooklyn Quilting Co. Holiday Wish List 2017

Every year I try to put together a list of gift ideas that those of us who quilt/craft/sew might enjoy.  Some of the gifts are for making and others are for just indulging.  There’s ideas that are inexpensive and perfect for stocking stuffers, and others that Santa can afford to buy but you can’t!

Here’s a few ideas to add to your list or to buy for someone else this year.

Holiday Wish List 2017

Paper pieces to have on hand for quilting on the go.  English Paper Piecing is one of my favorite ways to still be quilting even when I’m away from my sewing machine.

A pair of pink sneakers for knocking around the neighborhood.  Plus, they’re pink shoes.  Enough said.

A set of colored pencils with all the shades of the rainbow for sketching the next quilt and planning the color arrangement.

Liberty of London wall hooks to hang my collection of winter scarves.

Hand quilting needles to use on the stack of unfinished quilts that have been piling up all year.  Gotta get quilting on those!

A NETFLIX subscription to binge watch The Crown while quilting, which is basically a perfect day in my book.

Some extra bobbins, because you never seem to have enough.

To keep hardworking quilting hands soft, a tube of great smelling hand lotion.

A beautiful wall calendar from Rifle Paper Co.  I’m pretty much obsessed with every one of their floral patterns.

A new polka dot wallet, because I heart anything with polka dots.

Pretty glass bowls for catching loose ends in the sewing space or around the house.

A stylish water bottle for staying hydrated and healthy in the new year.

The new Heather Ross book about boys that’s good for girls, both young and old.  Heather read it to me and my quilting friends when we were at her house upstate earlier this year, and we were all a little teary at the end.  It’s just that touching.

Not available yet, but a pre-order of the new Anna Maria Horner collection, Sweet Dreams.  It’s scheduled to start shipping in February and would be a nice post-Christmas surprise in the mail.

Cut & Run – Finished

It’s done! And I love it.  The bright colors, the flying geese, the Liberty of London back…it all works for me.

As I was deciding how to quilt this one, I chose to do some really dense quilting.  This is probably the densest quilting I’ve ever done and I am really happy with it.  It looks great and gives the quilt lots of good texture.

That’s what I’m talking about!

After I finally got this quilt headed in the right direction (see earlier post where my original idea failed), I knew I wanted to use a piece of Liberty of London cotton lawn I have been hiding away for the back.  If you’ve ever worked with Liberty cotton lawns, you know how soft and silky they feel and how great they are to work with.  Pretty much heaven.

The piece I had was just wide and long enough to fit, but let me tell you I cut it close.  Like real close.  I barely had anything to trim off when I was squaring it up, but I’m going to call that a good use of fabric.  Zero waste!

So now I can call this one done and list it in my Etsy shop.  For a quilt that I hadn’t planned on, this one really worked out well.  Funny how that happens sometimes.

I’m now off to work on a new project that I can’t wait to tell you about.  More to come.
